Getting Started

"In ten sessions you will feel the difference, in twenty you will see the difference, and in thirty you'll have a whole new body." Joseph Pilates

What are the benefits of Pilates?

What is Pilates?

Pilates, pioneered by the late Joseph Pilates, is a mind-body exercise system designed to strengthen the weak and challenge the strong. This exercise system was created to balance the development of the body through core strength, flexibility and awareness in order to support efficient, graceful movement.

Pilates is about the coordination of movements using the correct muscle groups with focus and form. Frequency of exercise is important when you are first learning a new technique. We recommend at least 2 – 3 classes per week for the first 2 weeks in order to establish a solid foundation.

Pilates equipment is designed to aid you in gaining a solid Pilates foundation. Most Pilates clients training on the equipment will notice dramatic changes within 6-8 weeks by working out just 2-3 days a week.

What is a Pilates session like?

A typical private, semi-private or group Pilates class will incorporate exercises using mats and other accessories such as balls, BOSUS®, circles or thereabands or using equipment such as STOTT® Reformers. All sessions focus on the basic principles of breathing, spinal alignment, shoulder placement and deep abdominal connections.

Beginning students will learn how to apply these principles to basic-level exercises with mats or equipment. Once the basic movements and related vocabulary have been mastered, students can take on more demanding exercises with ease, coordination and fluidity.

What classes do you offer?

Westside Pilates LLC offers private, semi-private and group classes. All classes and sessions are one hour long. Private sessions are for people who want personalized workouts, semi-private sessions are geared for two people (a couple or two friends) interested in working out together. Group class sizes are limited so students must sign up in advance.

What can I expect during my first private session?

Most new clients can expect a 60-minute session with a health history review, goal setting, posture analysis. The session will begin either on the STOTT PILATES® Reformer, Mat or Stability Chair. Your instructor will verbally guide you through a series of STOTT PILATES five basic principles, foundational Pilates exercises, helping you achieve safe and stable movement.
